Lyric Hearing Aid Awarded “Best of What’s New”

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Out of thousands of entrants, Popular Science magazine named the Lyric hearing aid “Best of What’s New” 2009. This recognition is quite impressive, as the magazine’s editors choose just the top 100 tech innovations of the year — and those that make the cut are breakthrough products and technologies that represent a significant leap in their categories.

Winners, including the Lyric hearing aid, will be featured in the December issue of Popular Science, the most read issue of the year for over 20 years. Some other “Best of What’s New” categories include: Recreation, Security, Home Entertainment, Green Technology and Automotive. The magazine notes that this award is the top honor, and winners represent the highest level of achievement in their fields.

The Lyric hearing aid is truly innovative. It is often called “invisible” since it is placed, for up to four months, deep in the hearing canal. This hearing aid needs no battery changes and can even be worn while showering.

Insound Medical is responsible for the creation of the Lyric hearing aid, and they say it is the world’s first extended wear hearing aid. Its deep placement in the hearing canal makes it very appealing to people who may feel embarrassed or self-conscious about hearing aids — there is really no way for anyone to be able to tell a person is wearing it.

Tinnitus? Hearing Aids May Help

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Tinnitus is often described as ringing in the ears — the sound is also sometimes compared to crickets chirping, locusts, roaring, ticking or beeping — and it affects about 50 million people in the United States. The cause can be hearing loss, allergies, ear wax or ear infections, but whatever the cause, one thing is for sure: tinnitus is debilitating for those who experience it. The good news is that hearing aids may help.

A recent Your Health feature in USA Today answers a question from a reader who suffers from tinnitus. “Is there a hearing aid that can filter out this miserable ringing/buzzing in my ears?” writes the reader. Columnist Kim Painter includes advice from Duke University Medical Center otolaryngologist Debara Tucci, who says that “everyone with tinnitus should be checked by a doctor.” The reason for this is so that a doctor can determine the cause.

She also says that hearing aids can help with tinnitus for some people, since it can be a side effect of hearing loss. According to Tucci, the brain may compensate for a lack of sound input by making its own sound effects. Treating hearing loss with hearing aids, then, can be helpful.

Child’s Hearing Aids Stolen, One Returned

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Last week, an Edmonton, Canada child’s hearing aids were stolen during a robbery at her home — the burglar also stole the family’s Xbox and game accessories while they were out to dinner. The hearing aids, worth $22,000, were in the child’s backpack, which the burglar used to carry off the Xbox and games.

The support the family has seen from friends is truly wonderful. The Canoe.ca News reported that the mother’s co-worker brought to work on Friday an Xbox and games for her son, and a friend of the family’s held a fundraiser.

Thankfully, though, one of the hearing aids has turned up. Someone anonymously returned one to a drop-off location at a local shopping center. Both hearing aids were worth about $22,000, and the family has been understandably devastated by the loss. Eleven-year-old Haley, the child, used one of the hearing aids full time and the other was a spare.

Along with the stolen device, the person also returned the Xbox and the backpack. The police are looking into whether there are fingerprints on the Xbox or backpack they can use to track down the thief. Police have said that it’s possible the other hearing aid could have fallen out of the backpack.

Hearing Aids Info from the FDA

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Did you know that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website has valuable information about hearing loss and hearing aids? It’s certainly a handy resource that should not be missed. A great place to learn about hearing aids, the website even features a checklist for buying hearing aids.

Hearing Aids Checklist

The hearing aids checklist begins with a very useful recommendation: Before buying hearing aids, get a medical exam from a licensed physician. We agree — and we encourage you to have your hearing tested. Here are a few more recommendations included in the checklist:

  • Consider seeing an audiologist, who can administer an exam that will tell the type and amount of hearing loss being experienced. An audiologist can also give you options for improving your hearing loss.
  • Know how to take care of your hearing aid and what its warranty covers.
  • Choose a hearing aid that is convenient and easy for you to use.

Questions to Ask Before Buying Hearing Aids

Even more great information from the FDA website: They have a list of questions to ask before buying hearing aids. We know that buying hearing aids can be an expense, and it is a big decision. Knowing good questions to ask will help you make a decision. Here are some of the questions they suggest asking:

  • Will I need one or two hearing aids?
  • Which type/style of hearing aids would most benefit my needs?
  • How do I care for my hearing aids?
  • How long is the warranty, and is it extendable?
  • What’s the total cost?

New Starkey Hearing Aids Feature Sweep Technology

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

New from Starkey: hearing aids that feature Sweep Technology! We were excited to learn about this innovative new feature that will be found on the new Starkey S Series behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids. With Sweep Technology, instead of all of the traditional buttons found on hearing aids, there’s a touch surface that lets users adjust the volume and change settings just by sweeping or touching it with a finger.

Sweep Technology is very different and very innovative for hearing aids. Since there are no openings around the volume control wheel, it is impossible for moisture and dirt to get into the hearing aid. Plus, there is no mechanical movement required for activation — there is just a single seamless control on the sweep surface where users can have full access to changing memory, volume and standby controls. For example, when a user sweeps their finger up, the volume is raised. When they sweep down, the volume is lowered.

Starkey assures that even patients with limited dexterity will be able to easily change settings on hearing aids using Sweep Technology. For many wearers of hearing aids, changing the settings may be very difficult to do. That’s why Starkey spent three years researching and developing a way to incorporate advanced touch surface technology into a hearing aid. The company says their research has paid off — according to the company president, patients in their clinical trials have “overwhelmingly preferred Sweep Technology to traditional controls.”

Starkey Hearing Aids: Dallas, Houston and Austin

These new Starkey hearing aids are definitely an exciting new innovation in hearing technology, and their ease of use will no doubt make wearing and using hearing aids much simpler. Additionally, they deliver comfortable, high-resolution sound. If you have questions about Starkey hearing aids and are in Dallas, Houston or Austin, feel free to contact one of our Hearing Aid Express stores for more information.

It’s Hearing Aid Awareness Week

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Did you know that September 28 through October 4 is Hearing Aid Awareness Week? That’s right — it’s an entire week dedicated to the important subjects of hearing loss and hearing aids. It’s all thanks to the International Hearing Society, who declared this week as a way to inform the public about the issue.

One hearing aid manufacturer, Sonic Innovations, released a statement regarding this special week in which they noted that “not being able to hear is more important to your health than you may think.” They went on to say that depression, self-esteem issues and anxiety have all been linked to hearing loss. No doubt, it’s an important issue.

The popularity of portable music players is thought to have contributed to the hearing loss of young people, who damage their hearing when they listen to music way too loudly for extended periods of time. According to Sonic Innovations, there are 25 million people younger than 65 who “struggle with some form of hearing loss.” Forty-three percent of those 25 million are younger than 55. While it’s common to think of hearing loss as something older people must deal with, the truth is that it can happen to people of all ages.

Hearing Aid Awareness Week isn’t actually a new thing. It’s been a yearly occurrence since 1995. The Department of Health and Human Services’ National Health Information Center recognizes it as well.

If you or a loved one suffer from hearing loss and you’d like to get the most out of Hearing Aid Awareness week, stop by one of our hearing aid stores to find out more information. We have a friendly, knowledgeable staff that’s here to help you. Hearing Aid Express is also happy to offer free hearing evaluations and even hearing aid discounts.

Hearing Loss: Are Baby Boomers in Denial About It?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

There was a great story last week in Florida’s Foster Folly News about baby boomers and hearing loss. Siemens, a company that manufactures hearing aids, sponsored an Applied Research study called “The Cost of Hearing Loss” that was conducted in May of 2009.

The study found that 72 percent of baby boomers think their hearing is average or better, but children of baby boomers said that 70 percent of their family members “have suggested their father have his hearing tested and 64 percent have suggested the same for their mother.” Interesting findings, no doubt, especially the conclusion that just 32 percent of those baby boomers said someone in their family suggested a hearing test.

In total, 500 respondents were a part of the study — 250 baby boomers and 250 children of baby boomers. The study also asked respondents about hearing aids and what they thought of them. Here are some of the results:

  • 75 percent of baby boomers do not currently use hearing aids and are not considering hearing aids
  • 34 percent of baby boomers said hearing aids look awkward, and 29 percent said they make you look old
  • 25 percent said hearing aids are uncomfortable, and 23 percent said they’re too hard to buy

Clearly, the study shows that baby boomers and their children are not on the same page about hearing loss. As the article notes, hearing loss affects many people in a variety of ways and can lead to anxiety, isolation, loneliness and depression over time. Finding a solution as soon as possible is important in order to prevent hearing loss from becoming a psychological problem instead of just a physical problem.

The article also points out that there are so many different styles of hearing aids with design and color options “that make the devices inconspicuous.” At Hearing Aid Express, we’re proud to offer an impressive variety of hearing aids. What’s more is that our friendly staff can help you find the hearing aids that are just right for you. Stop by one of our stores today, or contact us online.

Free Amplified Phone: Are You Eligible?

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Here’s some great news: If you’re a Texas resident with hearing loss, you are eligible for a free amplified phone thanks to the Specialized Telecommunications Assistance Program (STAP). An amplified phone is wonderful for people who are having difficulty hearing while on the phone and can help them communicate better on the phone. The phone amplifies sound, even when you’re not wearing a hearing aid.

The free amplified phone STAP program is made possible because of a tax Texans all pay on their phone bill. So if you’re a Texas resident who is suffering from hearing loss, you should definitely take advantage of this wonderful offer by visiting one of our Hearing Aid Express locations in Austin, Houston or Dallas for a free screening. If you qualify, you will receive an application for a free amplified phone, and we will take care of mailing it for you.

After the application is filled out and mailed in, it takes about six weeks for the state of Texas to mail you a voucher for the free amplified phone. You will want to take that voucher in and pick out an amplified phone that best fits your needs. Keep in mind that just one free amplified phone per household is allowed through this program, and people are eligible for a new one every five years.

Hearing Aid Express is happy to assist you with the process of getting your free amplified phone. We are also always glad to help you with any questions about hearing loss or hearing aids. Stop by one of our stores today, or feel free to contact us. Also, don’t miss the video below to see Hearing Aid Express’ recent appearance on Good Day Houston to talk about the free amplified phone.
