All About Hearing Aid Styles

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

There are several different kinds of hearing aid styles, which is great news for people suffering from hearing loss who are concerned about how their hearing aids will look. For people who fear that their hearing aids will be noticeable to others, there are hearing aid styles that make the instrument nearly invisible. Advancements in technology and innovative manufacturers are to thank for the many hearing aid styles available today.

Behind-the-Ear (BTE) Hearing Aids

The Dot by ReSound is an example of a behind-the-ear hearing aid. This hearing aid style is appropriately named: It sits behind the ear, making many of them hard to spot. In fact, ReSound calls the Dot “the smallest, most discreet behind-the-ear hearing aid available.” It should be noted, however, that not all behind-the-ear hearing aids offer the same discreet look as the Dot by ReSound. Behind-the-ear hearing aids can be typically be worn by people of all ages with mild to profound hearing loss.

Open Fit Hearing Aids

Open fit hearing aids are similar to behind-the-ear hearing aids. They are also placed behind the ear, and according to the Mayo Clinic, the sound travels from an open fit hearing aid to a speaker in the ear canal via a small tube or wire to a tiny dome or speaker. Open fit hearing aids may be best for people with mild to moderate high-frequency hearing loss.

Other Hearing Aid Styles

Many other hearing aid styles exist, like in-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids, in-the-canal (ITC) hearing aids and completely-in-the-canal (CIC) hearing aids.
