New Starkey Hearing Aids Feature Sweep Technology

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

New from Starkey: hearing aids that feature Sweep Technology! We were excited to learn about this innovative new feature that will be found on the new Starkey S Series behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids. With Sweep Technology, instead of all of the traditional buttons found on hearing aids, there’s a touch surface that lets users adjust the volume and change settings just by sweeping or touching it with a finger.

Sweep Technology is very different and very innovative for hearing aids. Since there are no openings around the volume control wheel, it is impossible for moisture and dirt to get into the hearing aid. Plus, there is no mechanical movement required for activation — there is just a single seamless control on the sweep surface where users can have full access to changing memory, volume and standby controls. For example, when a user sweeps their finger up, the volume is raised. When they sweep down, the volume is lowered.

Starkey assures that even patients with limited dexterity will be able to easily change settings on hearing aids using Sweep Technology. For many wearers of hearing aids, changing the settings may be very difficult to do. That’s why Starkey spent three years researching and developing a way to incorporate advanced touch surface technology into a hearing aid. The company says their research has paid off — according to the company president, patients in their clinical trials have “overwhelmingly preferred Sweep Technology to traditional controls.”

It’s Hearing Aid Awareness Week

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Did you know that September 28 through October 4 is Hearing Aid Awareness Week? That’s right — it’s an entire week dedicated to the important subjects of hearing loss and hearing aids. It’s all thanks to the International Hearing Society, who declared this week as a way to inform the public about the issue.

One hearing aid manufacturer, Sonic Innovations, released a statement regarding this special week in which they noted that “not being able to hear is more important to your health than you may think.” They went on to say that depression, self-esteem issues and anxiety have all been linked to hearing loss. No doubt, it’s an important issue.

The popularity of portable music players is thought to have contributed to the hearing loss of young people, who damage their hearing when they listen to music way too loudly for extended periods of time. According to Sonic Innovations, there are 25 million people younger than 65 who “struggle with some form of hearing loss.” Forty-three percent of those 25 million are younger than 55. While it’s common to think of hearing loss as something older people must deal with, the truth is that it can happen to people of all ages.

Hearing Aid Awareness Week isn’t actually a new thing. It’s been a yearly occurrence since 1995. The Department of Health and Human Services’ National Health Information Center recognizes it as well.

If you or a loved one suffer from hearing loss and you’d like to get the most out of Hearing Aid Awareness week, stop by one of our hearing aid stores to find out more information. We have a friendly, knowledgeable staff that’s here to help you. Hearing Aid Express is also happy to offer free hearing evaluations and even hearing aid discounts.
